Non-negotiable on a first Athens visit: the approach through the Propylaia, the restored western face of the Parthenon and the city spread below still deliver the trip's defining moment. The catch is physical rather than cultural: exposed summer heat, polished marble and steep uneven routes make the middle of the day the wrong time for almost everyone.
