Walk or take the bus instead of adding the cable car, and visit as part of a Montjuïc day. Crossing the city only for the castle gives a weak return on time and transport.

The approach is almost cheerful by cable car, then the fortress changes the mood. From the seaward walls, ferries and container cranes replace Barcelona's usual postcard skyline. Inside, bare courts and exhibits trace a building repeatedly used against the city below, including the execution of Catalan president Lluís Companys. The rooms are secondary; walk the full perimeter and give the historical material time.
